Autumn Home Improvements: Preparing Your Property for Winter

16 October 2024

As we move into autumn, it’s time to think about preparing your home for the colder months ahead. At B&G Construction, we believe in building visions with precision, and that includes helping you maintain and upgrade your property for maximum comfort and energy efficiency. Let’s explore solutions, from simple to cutting-edge, for your autumn home improvements.

Three Energy and Cost-Efficient Upgrades

Investing in energy efficiency not only reduces your carbon footprint but also saves on costs in the long run. Here are the key areas that benefit most from upgrades:

1. Insulation

Proper insulation in your walls, attic, and floors can significantly reduce heat loss. According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), good insulation can save up to 30% on your heating bills. There are three categories of insulation: cavity wall, internal and external.

  • Cavity wall insulation: quick to install and cost-effective for homes with suitable cavity walls.
  • Internal insulation (dry-lining): ideal for homes without cavity walls, though it slightly reduces room size.
  • External insulation: While more costly, it’s highly effective and can improve your home’s appearance.

Aerogel insulation, while not commonplace, is available through specialised suppliers and is an excellent choice for high-end renovation projects where space is at a premium.

Another option, if your property is suitable, is to install a green roof system.  Gaining in popularity, especially in urban areas, green roof systems provide excellent insulation and can also help with rainwater management.

See the SEAI website for available grants for your next project.

2. Windows

Double or triple-glazed windows can dramatically improve your home’s thermal efficiency. High-performance triple-glazed windows with low-E coatings are particularly effective in the Irish climate. While the cost may seem high at the outset, as a recent Irish Times article recommends, it is better to prioritise performance and choose the most energy-efficient windows possible, as the long-term savings make the investment worthwhile. Motorised blinds and curtains that can be controlled remotely will improve insulation even further.

3. Smart thermostats

An easy way to ensure your home’s temperature is optimal for comfort and efficiency, is to install a smart thermostat device. Climote and Hive are popular choices that can be integrated with your home’s heating system. These smart thermostats learn from your habits and preferences, automatically adjusting your home’s temperature for optimal comfort and efficiency. You can also control the heating of your home and hot water via an app, allowing you to set heating schedules, check usage and get instant alerts.

4. Solar PV systems

Solar PV panels allow you to generate your own renewable electricity. Recent changes in regulations allow for the sale of excess electricity back to the grid, a process called microgeneration, making these systems more attractive for homeowners.

5. Air source heat pumps

Given Ireland’s climate, air source heat pumps are often more practical than geothermal systems. They’re highly efficient and can provide both heating and cooling. See the SEAI website for available grants.

Winter Weatherproofing and Maintenance Tips

By weatherproofing your home and carrying out regular maintenance, you’ll keep the elements at bay and prevent costly repairs. Here are our top tips:

  • Seal gaps: Check for drafts around windows and doors. Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any gaps you find. High-performing sealants are also available and offer superior protection against moisture intrusion.
  • Roof inspection: Ensure your roof is in good condition to withstand winter storms. Replace any damaged tiles or shingles.
  • Gutter maintenance: Clean your gutters to prevent ice and water damage. Consider installing gutter guards for long-term protection.
  • Boiler service: Have your boiler serviced by a professional to ensure it’s running efficiently and safely.
  • Chimney sweep: If you have a fireplace, clean the chimney to prevent fire hazards and improve efficiency.
  • Exterior paint: Touch up your exterior paint where needed. This not only improves curb appeal but also protects your home’s structure from moisture damage.
